1. Our Background
Colas Around the Globe
A world leader in transport infrastructure construction and maintenance works – including roads, railways, water and air transport – the Colas Group participates in 60,000 projects each year, with 62,000 employees in more than 50 countries on five continents.

The history of the company dates back to the 1920’s, when bitumen emulsion was discovered and enabled to build bituminous roads without having to heat up the binding material. Société Routiére Colas was founded in France on 16 May 1929 following an agreement with Shell oil company. The name Colas derives from cold asphalt. After gradual growth, by the 1950’s, the company had covered 1/5 of the French asphalt production. A decade later Colas made its first appearance in the French stock exchange. The first overseas expansion was in Canada in 1962, and the company kept on expanding to Indonesia, Libya, Iraq, Columbia, Venezuela and the United States. In 1985, Colas joined the Bouygues group. A few years later the company started to expand to Eastern Europe, and Hungary became the first country with a Colas subsidiary in the region.

Innovation at Colas
The CORE is a driving force in the exchange of expertise and know-how amongst research experts, academics, industrial sites and operational teams in charge of our jobsites.
Its laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge, high-tech equipment. The versatility of the men and women who work there is also an asset.

WATTWAY
Photovoltaic pavement
In cooperation with the French National Institute for Solar Energy, Colas came up with the world’s first photovoltaic (solar) road in 2015. WattWay is a thin photovoltaic panel, which is capable of generating clean, renewable energy once installed onto the road surface, while not restricting traffic on the road in any way.

FLOWELL
Light-emitting road marking system
LED illuminated road marking technology, which, in addition to enhanced road safety functions, enables the sharing of road surfaces between different commuters.

MOBILITY BY COLAS
Interactive mobility solutions
Three community based mobile solutions: Automatic detection of warning zones (Anais), urban construction traffic flow optimization (Qievo), single interface for users of shared parking places and multimodal commuters (Moov’Hub).

WMA
Warm Mix Asphalt
Colas was the first company in Central Europe to build WMA trial sections using foamed bitumen. Keeping mixing and installation temperatures down to 110-150 °C leads to lower energy consumption and significantly improved eco-friendliness. Currently six of are mixing plants are equipped with bitumen foaming devices.

RUGOSOFT
Whispering Asphalt
In addition to providing outstanding acoustic characteristics, this “whispering” wearing course is characterised by excellent skid resistance, while not requiring specific winter operation and maintenance.

SEVE
Environmental impact analysing software
The SEVE Eco-comparateur application, which is in use at the Group, gives a reading of the carbon dioxide emissions associated with various road construction technologies. Through schematic diagrams, the energy consumption values of alternative pavement structures become comparable, thus allowing us to cut the amount of greenhouse gases released to the environment.

ALIZÉ
Road Design Software
The method entails designing the thickness of pavement layers with consideration to strains deriving from the number of passing vehicles and climatic conditions, while relying on decades of practical experience. Roads designed with Alize software will not crumble before the end of their predicted life-span.

VALORCOL
Plant-Mixed Recycled Asphalt
With 100% recycled asphalt and emulsion produced in a special mobile mixing plant, this cold asphalt mix provides cost-efficient application for reconstruction of minor roads.

NOVACOL
In-situ Cold Recycling
Novacol is an in-situ cold-recycling technology. The cold process developed in France is effectively applicable for the reconstruction of secondary roads by recycling the existing pavement with special equipment.

3. THE HUNGARIAN COMPANY GROUP
Colas Hungary
Activities
The Hungarian team of Colas has been playing an active role in the country’s construction investments since the early 1990s. Through the continuous improvement of technical solutions, the main objectives of the holding company – which has been managed by Hungarian experts right from the start – are to maintain reliability and deliver high quality works all around the country.

Colas Út
Activities
To complement its nationwide network of eight asphalt mixing facilities, the company operates a bitumen emulsion plant located in Gyöngyös. In recent decades, Colas Út has been active throughout the entire construction sector from large-scale projects – such as the construction of the M30, M4, M25 and M70 motorways – to local road development initiatives and private investments that include the plants of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and LEGO. Since 2022, the activities of Colas Út also cover the installation of engineering structures. When it comes to bridgeworks, our most prominent references include Hungary’s second longest viaduct near Szebény, but we also take pride in the circular bridge on the Hódmezővásárhely bypass of road 47, which was realised in a mere 18 months.

Activities
As a 70-year-old subsidiary of the group, the activities of Colas Alterra comprise utility construction, the installation of gas-, district heating-, water- and sewage lines, the construction of treatment plants and waste disposal facilities, the performance of flood control projects, as well as backing alternative forms of energy use in both Budapest and other settlements. The jobs of Colas Alterra frequently involve works in densely built urban surroundings: we have decades of experience when it comes to the renovation of public spaces, rail transit networks, public utilities, or comprehensive urban rehabilitation schemes – all of which require flawless organisation.

Colas Északkő
Activities
Colas Eszakko’s quarries are located in Northern Hungary, from the river Danube to the Tokaj hills. Our major products include various andesite-based crushed stones, but our product range also comprises soil-improving grinds, freestone, paving stone, and ceramic-industry raw materials from rhyolite tuff. At our deposit sites, we offer disposal of construction-industry demolition waste materials. On request we also process such waste on-site in grain sizes specifi ed by the customer. With our continuously developing fleet of machinery, we strive to satisfy the requirements of the construction sector with the lowest possible impact on the environment.
